Can Fibromyalgia Symptoms be Relieved?

Can the Fluidity of Myofascial Work Help Alleviate Fibromyalgia Pain?

Fibromyalgia is a condition which involves widespread pain and hypersensitivity with specific tender points in the muscles.  This syndrome can stop people from living their daily lives with ease.

Creating a healthy life style is one way to approach improving quality of life.  Some positive ways to improve your sense of wellbeing are:  healthy sleep routines,   exercise,  and of course-good eating habits.  But can you find someone who can actually help you through your discomfort with hands on manual techniques to decrease or maybe eliminate the pain?

In more recent times, the importance of working with the myofascial and craniosacral systems has come to the forefront for improving many pain issues.  Fibromyalgia is one of the conditions where I have seen clients finally find some relief.  Whether it is done by a Craniosacral Therapist, a Myofascial Therapist or a Structural Integration Rolfer type of work,  fascia is key in finding support.  This is because the superficial fascia is highly innervated,  and releasing it can balance the Central Nervous system while bringing about a better quality sense of wellness. But because of the tenderness, it is important to ask your therapist to work lightly and to respect your boundaries for what can be tolerated.  Gentle work can be profound too without having to dig in and cause more pain.

Fibromyalgia Helped by Sleep

One of the most difficult symptoms of fibromyalgia is lack of sleep.  Clients I see often share complaints of insomnia and not feeling rested in the morning.

Are you one of these people disturbed by pain during the night?

fibromyalgia

insomnia with fibromyalgia

Often frequent brain arousal interrupts the restorative properties of sleep with Fibromyalgia. So the best thing you can do is make yourself comfortable and as stress free as possible before going to sleep.

Some of the things you can do to set up an easier night are:

  • Meditation
  • Take a Warm Bath
  • Stop Using Electronics a few hours before bedtime.
  • Keep the Room Dark
  • Make Sure Your Room is Quiet
  • Keep the room on the cooler side, but the temperature should be comfortable.

One of the things that I like to introduce is Craniosacral Therapy (CST) to people who experience the challenges of Fibromyalgia symptoms.  Often when I have clients on the table, they find themselves so relaxed that I often hear a bit of snoring.  The Central Nervous System is able to come into better balanced as the tissues surrounding the brain and the spinal cord relax. Clients who experience CST have also told me that they tend to sleep better at night.  Their bodies recuperate and they feel fresher for the next day.  If you are suffering from fibromyalgia and hoping to find a deeper night’s rest, why not try a few sessions of Craniosacral Therapy to see if it can help you?

Trusting the Wisdom Within With Craniosacral

One of the greatest things about Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is that this modality is all about trusting your own body’s wisdom to heal.

Yes it is important to find a Craniosacral Therapist who is knowledgeable and has good experience with your issues.  However- the best session will be all about having faith in the process.

During a Craniosacral Session,  the first thing your practitioner will do is listen to your body to find out where there might be dysfunctional patterns that lead to pain and other ailments.  This is done by starting at the feet and moving up to the head in order to check for amplitude, symmetry and other qualities of the craniosacral rhythm throughout the body.  Once the primary lesion is discovered, it is easy to go to that area and start the session for healing.  The rest is about following the body’s response to the work.

During evaluation and thereafter, Craniosacral Therapy touch is gentle and non-invasive. There are very few contra-indications with CST, yet the effects are far reaching and profound in your healing process.  The primary benefits that you will first feel are relief of pain, more flexibility and often more vitality.  By working primarily with the Central Nervous System as the focus, a Craniosacral Therapist can dialogue with every other body system to support the integration of full body functioning.  Often clients are unexpectingly surprised that there can be so much change in attitude, feeling and sensation after just a few session.

Does Craniosacral Help with Symptoms of Fibromyalgia? By Sharon Hartnett

What is Fibromyalgia?

In basic terms, fibromyalgia is a chronic overstimulated nerve condition that includes general pain and tenderness across the body.  Over 5.8 million people in the United States are diagnosed with fibromyalgia, mostly women.

What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?

If you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, it is wise to consult a physician:

  • Aching all over, often with specific points more painful than others.
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Swelling
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty Sleeping
  • Brain Fog
  • Headaches
  • Incontinence
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Stiffness

These symptoms can often be overlooked because of their similarities to autoimmune, hypothyroidism and other disease processes.  So it is important to get tested.  Take time to write down your observations and experience so that you can share this with your doctor.

For people wanting to include an integrative protocol to improve their health while diagnosed with fibromyalgia, read the below studies on how Craniosacral Therapy works and its associated  benefits.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therpay (CST) is a light touch approach in bodywork that invites profound change and improvement into your life. It releases deep tensions to relieve pain and dysfunction while improving whole body health and performance. A seasoned therapist begins by gentle listening to different areas of the body in order to monitor the craniosacral fluid’s rhythm that is flowing around the Central Nervous System.  It is possible to get a sense of where the flow is strong, weak or out of balance.  As she follows the listening, she can move toward the source of the dysfunction and help to rebalance the problem areas.  The therapist is also trained to gather information within the fascia, a connective tissues that wraps around the body and interconnects as a web throughout the body. By using both hands to re-educate the memory of tissues, the body starts to remember a more healthy and relaxed state of being.

What are the benefits of Craniosacral Therapy?

First and foremost, Craniosacral Therapy balances the nervous system.  For people who hyped up and have a difficult time relaxing,  they will generally notice a deep letting go of tension and stress.  On the other side of the coin, people who are tired and find themselves with low energy often feel more vital and sharp. By bringing the body back into balance, it resets itself to operate more efficiently. Because the Central Nervous System is engaged with the rest of the body, CST is helpful in other areas as well.  some of the conditions that CST address are:

  • ADD/ADHS
  • Scoliosis
  • Central Nervous System Disorders
  • Infant and Childhood Disorders
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Migraine and Headaches
  • Stress and Tension Related Disosrders
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • TMJ
  • PTSD
  • Orthopedic Problems
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Coordination Challenges
  • Balances out Emotional Feelings
  • Autism
