How Craniosacral Therapy Can Help with Plantar Fasciitis

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Do you wake up in the morning feeling stiffness or pain in your feet as you stand up?  If so,  you may be experiencing plantar fasciitis.

The thick ligament that connects your heel to toes (along the arch) is called the plantar fascia.  When this tissue is weak, it can cause pain either when you get up or are walking uphill.  The pain may come on gradually or it may feel sharp and immediate. There are a few reasons that can contribute to this condition:  overweight, high arches or flat feet, running, tight achilles tendons, or walking in shoes that don’t support your feet well.

One of the modalities of hands on work that can be very helpful with this condition is myofascial therapy.  In conjunction with rest when necessary, wearing good shoes with arch support, stretching and exercising joints, it is possible to get some relief.  One of the things that needs to happen from a massage perspective is that the fascia all the way from surrounding foot bones and muscles need to find good tone and relaxation balance. Often from improper posture, the fascia can get rotated, twisted or adhere to the bones causing lack of healthy mobility.  I find that by working with the fascia and with the Craniosacral system, that clients have seen wonderful changes as the tissues begin to soften,  unwind as the foot gets more properly aligned.  This work can be done either with patience and a soft gentle touch, or more strongly as long as the therapist is listening and responding to the information they are receiving from the fascia.

It does take time for plantar fasciitis to clear up with many clients.  It’s important to remember though that the stress patterns that created the pain were built over time, and long-term resolution takes time too in some cases.

If your pain continues to get worst, do consult a physician.  They can test and diagnose your condition properly.

Myofascial Release for Sports Performance

Myofascial Release therapy is focused on the attention given to improving the posture and flexibility in the body.

Who can benefit from this type of work?

Myofascial Massage is very beneficial for chronic pain issues, body imbalances, as well as people suffering from stiffness and lack of range of motion.  Working with the fascia can help those with autism,  people who have experienced trauma and others living with arthritis. No matter what sport you play or activity in which you engage, athletes who are wanting to improve their performance by finding better length in lines and movement often find enhanced performance.  In my practice, I have seen myofascial work truly helps people to feel more energized and in tune with their functionality.

How is myofascial massage different than typical swedish massage?

This type of work is definitely different than typical massage.  When working with fascia, the massage therapist does not use a lubricant.  This is so we can differentiate between the layers of fascia to unravel and and help release restrictions in the tissues and along the spine.  The goal is to stretch and loosen the body so that all the organs and other structures can let go in their most optimal and relaxed position. Many times clients say that this work last longer.  They feel dramatically different, especially after a 10 series of Structural Integration.

How does Myofascial Work help specifically with Sports Performance?

In regards to Sports Performance,  myofascial release can help give athletes that extra edge. Often when people train hard, they can get into repetitive habits.  By touching into the various different fascial planes of the fascial web, the body opens to newer movements throughout. There is a functional and structural connection between all of the body’s soft and hard tissues. By addressing the whole body,  motion gains better relationship to gravity again and again.  Athletes young and old can benefit from myofascial work.

Myofascial Release Can Help You Feel Alive!

Myofascial Release has helped many of my clients to feel revitalized and more alive!

Yes, those membranes that contain, wrap around and support all the material in the human body are key in helping you to let go of dysfunctional patterns that keep your energy limited.

Myofascial Release is a holistic treatment that focuses on finding those tight restrictive areas of the body that keep pain internalized.  By listening with our hands, fascial therapists can find those difficult places in the more superficial outer layers to deep inside at the core.  By focusing on improving posture through releasing the fascia, the body can relax and find optimal efficiency in fluidity of movement.

When you feel better in your body, everything in your life changes.  Your outlook brightens and the way that you interact with your world feels more positive.
Some of the symptoms that have been relieved through fascial work are:
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Neck and Back Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Menstrual Pain
  • Pelvic Floor Tightness
  • Sports Injuries
  • Jaw Pain
  • Scoliosis
  • Neurological Disorders
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • TMJ and other Jaw Pain
  • Carpel Tunnel
  • Bad Posture

Myofascial Work can be approached with light touch to a deeper more penetrating contact.  It’s up to the Myofascial Therapist to dialogue with clients to find out what level of pressure best suits the session.  Sometimes as a physical restriction is addressed, the response can be painful even with only 5 grams of pressure.  So make sure that you communicate what your level of feeling into sensation is to your therapist.  Because if you tighten up in reaction, that is counter-productive. The best work is all about Myofascial Release.

What is so great about Myofascial Release is that once the restriction dissolves, it’s gone.  Yet other layers must be addressed if you want a whole body approach to healing.  It’s best to talk to your Therapist about a series of sessions to unwind or help the body let go of tension patterns.  It often takes years or a trauma to bring the body out of balance.  Patience, feeling with awareness and letting go can change your life if you give it a chance!
