What is a Healer?

In this day and age, almost every town has a person who is a Healer.

But what is a Healer?

Traditionally, we have gone to physicians, and nurses to help us to heal in recent times.  However, in the last 30 years or so, there has been a resurgence of more natural types of healing.  Dr. Weil is the first professional person that I can think of who opened the door to integrative therapies into the mainstream.  Deepak Chopra  also comes to mind as leader in bringing the mind, body and spirit connection to the media with famous people like Oprah Winfrey. Dr. Barbara Brennan intrigued us with her book “Hands of Light” as it sold thousands of books connecting the Human Energy field with health and the disease process.  With a focus now on practices like: yoga, meditation, energy healing, nutrition, stress relief techniques and hands on type of massage and bodywork, people are moving into a more open area of healing after not finding what they need from the old western paradigm.

Online and in conversations, I have heard some people raise doubt to the proof of success for these integrative practices.  And that makes sense to me.  If a person is only open to thinking a certain way, it is very difficult to receive benefits from something as subjective as being held, or cared for with compassion and feeling.   Yet tests and studies have been made which have shown wonderful positive changes after treatments such as Craniosacral Therapy and Structural Integration.  Incredible miracles have occurred when people come together in mindfulness and bring their awareness to things like “peace” and “harmony”.  Yet these still have not always easy to prove as an ideal healing methods.  Healing is a personal journey that will be taken by your sense of individual self.   A greater sense of expansion will call you home if you listen.

If you are on your healing path,  eventually you will realize that the “Healer” you are looking for is within yourself.  There is an intelligence that lies within that is deeper than anyone else’s practice that can truly help.  On the same note, we are not meant to do anything alone.  And whichever healing path you decide to take, there is a dance.  Listen to your deepest longing and reach out.  Allow that connection to heal from the external to within.  And that experience will now always exist inside of you. It can not be taken away unless you offer it into the land of forgetfulness. Often when the healer leaves, the client may not feel as empowered enough to maintain what has been received.  However, after more sessions and positive mirroring, the client begins to resource within for what is needed more easily.  So to be clear,  the Healing and Healer lies within each of us, but facilitation and relationship are key to humans health and wellbeing.

Whether you decide to see a Medical Doctor, PT, Chiropractor, Acupuncturist or Massage Therapist, make your decisions by listening to your inner “Truth Voice”.  It will lead you to the right person who will facilitate your health and wellness goals in that moment.  Stay while it works,  question when it stops, and be in the moment with whatever is showing up.  The Universe will show you what you need even when your habitual thinking gets into the way.

If you are looking for that great person to make it all better, just look into the mirror and look.  Nobody else is going to do it for you, but there are lots of wonderful caring people who will help you on your way with the tools they have in their pocket and hearts.

Feeling Stressed Out?

Feeling stressed out by life?

Everyone feels stressed out at least occasionally. Through all of life’s cycles, growth opportunities pop up presenting us with challenges that push against our boundaries. This can make us feel uncomfortable or stressed out. Fortunately, many of us have had positive influences that have  taught us how to navigate through rather difficult times efficiently.  But when we don’t know how to cope well any longer,  then what?  Is it possible to take these stresses and turn them around to make ourselves better?

We have to remember that if we change our perspectives about our difficulties,  the rest of the energy supporting the stress will shift too.

Remember that:

  • Overload is just about how we perceive a certain situation.
  • The way our bodies habitually respond to stress can be re-organized into a healthier response.
  • We are in charge of how we interact with the world in which we live.

Anything that you believe poses a threat to your way of being can cause stress.  So how does your mind, body and spirit let go of any ideas of danger?

  1. Being mindful of your own experience is a good place to begin. By bringing attention to both your internal and external environment, you will begin to see what ignites stress. Some of the physiological signs might be: slower digestion, heart rate rises, muscles contract, breathing quickens, and it may be difficult to sleep.  While you are experiencing the thought and the energy behind the stress, be curious and observant.  This is a good way to practice meditation.
  2. Receiving massage and bodywork has been shown to reduce stress, including modalities such as Craniosacral Therapy, Trigger Point, Structural Integration and the light moving touch of Swedish as well.  Feeling deeply into the body re-educates how we think and helps us re-route into a more relaxed and calm state of being.
  3. Body centered psychotherapies can be very helpful as well.  For example, Hakomi is based on peaceful methods of bringing awareness to your experience and trying on different perspectives.  This can give you new ways to view life down to the cellular level. This therapy is different than typical talk therapy as the main focus is bringing attention to the body to open the doorway to your consciousness.
  4. Physical Exercise pumps up your endorphins. Stress melts away. A good workout helps you to feel healthier and feel more alive.
  5. Deep breathing can help slower the heart rate and decrease your blood pressure.  A commitment to yoga practice will certainly give you opportunities to experience stress relief.
  6. Aromatherapy with oils from Young Living Oils or Doterra can help you to relax in a nice bath or with a foot massage before you go to sleep.  The intention of using the oils for health and good self-care can be very helpful if you are feeling anxious or imbalanced.
  7. Finding a good chiropractor who works with stability as well as flexibility can do wonders in helping you feel better aligned.  When the spine is healthy, life looks a lot more positive!
  8. Byron Katie has come up with 4 questions that will help you change your life.  Her worksheets are free online and you can view her on Youtube.  Check out www.thework.com.
  9. Gentle movement exercises like Felderkrais or Continuum will awaken your deeper sense of centeredness.
  10. Eckhart Tolle is known for bringing out focus “Into the Now”.  His teachings can help one to let go of suffering and stress by recognizing our tendencies to live in the past and future rather than being Present.

Remember that If stress is interfering with your life’s purpose and health, it’s time to do something different that will help you resource your internal skills to help you move through life with more ease.  There are practices you can do alone, in a class, or with the help of a professional.  The more serious the issue with anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD it is best to find the right professional with good experience and references.

Aromatherapy: Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is Power when it comes to choosing the best Essential Oils.

If you are interested in buying essential oils, make sure you take the time to read up and ask questions on the many brand offerings. There are plenty of alternatives and it’s important to find out the differences between oils before purchasing. You do usually get what you pay for in this case so being educated is a plus. Quality oils are usually more costly, but worth your efforts and the price if they produce the desired effects you are looking for.

A good way to start your education: Begin by researching the companies who sell essential oils.Generally, my favorite essential oils come from Young Living Oils. However, I have also purchased quality oils from other sellers. I like to keep my mind open and continue to investigate the various brands and quality. One of the newer companies that recently broke off from Young Living Oils has started a new business is Doterra. I have heard wonderful things about the high caliber of their oils and hope to try some soon.  What I can say about Young Living Oils though is that the process they use when planting, cultivating, harvesting and distilling is of the highest standards for a therapeutic grade oil.  The beneficial properties of their therapeutic oils are produced through an exacting science and years of experience.  Young Living Oils specifically plans the days of planting, and uses natural methods to produce the choice compounds needed for top grade essential oils. Their value comes from using a unique method of distillation, without diluting or mixing with synthetic substances to produce a pure oil that is consistent and high in quality.

Next: Learn the differences between Hydrosols, Absolutes and Fragrance Oils. Hydrosols are fundamentally an essential oil diluted in water. Fragrance oils which are often sold as floral waters are made of synthetic compounds which may smell similar but may not be used for therapeutic purposes. Absolutes are generally much higher in concentrated oils and are extracted with solvents. For the most part, the absolutes are more costly, and the fragrance oils less.  So when shopping, make sure to understand what you are buying, especially if you have a preferred purpose in mind.

Just so you know: There is a scientific basis for how the compounds found in essential oils affect the body and the environment.  If you look up the Young Living Oil Company, there is a lot of information on their site regarding each single oil, blended oils, and other products. However, as a practitioner who uses oils in work and personally, I find it helpful to buy small bottles to sample. For example, if I want to clean my house with lemon which is a relatively inexpensive oil, I can try different brands to see what smells the best, makes me feel better and produces the best overall effect. I usually find myself going back to the Young Living Brand, but not all the time.  Each person has a different response to each oil and I recommend seeing what works best for you.  Knowledge is power!

It is also helpful to find a Massage Therapist who uses Therapeutic Essential Oils during a session.That way, in advance, if you let him/her know your current issues, a mix can be blended for you. That way you can have an experience of what oils you like and may not care for. Often, I will hold a bottle of an oils to my clients’ nose to see if they like the smell. Once applied, it takes some time for the fragrance to diminish, so its best to like what you are wearing.

There is also the well known Raindrop Therapy that Young Living Oils is known for. Massage Therapists across the globe are using this technique to bring balance and harmony to the systems in the body. The Massage Therapist massages the oils into the feet, and then into the spine and surrounding tissues. A hot towel is then applied for 10 minutes.  The whole process feels great!  

In truth, knowledge is power when it comes to buying the best essential oil for your unique purposes.Researching the companies who sell, understanding the differences of quality and sampling the individual essential oils will tell you what works best for you. Aromatherapy is fun to get into and you’ll find yourself feeling more calm and centered .

Aromatherapy Massage for PMS

Aromatherapy for PMS

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) affects a great number of woman. For each person, the commencing wave of hormonal changes during the start of ovulation cycle brings a different experience, but what many women find in common is the predictable pattern of mood swings, food cravings, tender breasts,loss of libido, irritability and depression. Let’s face it, PMS  doesn’t make a happy few days for the woman going through these swings nor for the people around her.

Nothing has been proven to completely eliminate all of the symptoms of PMS, but there is help.  One of the things I recommend is an Aromatherapy Massage.  There are essential oils that can be very balancing and comforting during these sensitive times. Depending on whether the moods or symptoms are weepy or angry, bloated or low in energy, a formulated mix can be designed for you.  Some of the oils that may be used are:  Grapefruit, Rose, Chomile, Nutmeg, Clary-sage, Bergamot, Geranium and Dragon Time™.  If you have a Licensed Massage Therapist who has some background in Aromatherapy, call in advanced to see if she can create a unique blend for your symptoms.  During the massage, the essential oils can be massaged into your abdomen, lower back, buttocks, chest and hips to relieve discomfort.

One of my favorite blends that clients often like is Dragon Time™.  I order it through Young Living Oils, a company selling high grade therapeutic oils. Dragon Time™is a blend of calming and soothing essential oils, including clary sage, which contains natural phytoestrogens, estrogen-like chemicals found in plant foods such as beans, seeds, and grains.  It also contains the following oils which are very balancing: Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), marjoram (Origanum majorana), yarrow (Achillea millefolium), and jasmine (Jasminum officinale).

Other strategies that may help relief the stress of PMS:

  • Eat less salt to help decrease bloating and fluid build-up.
  • Limit sugary and high fat foods
  • Eat an overall healthy diet including high-fiber foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables and calcium-rich foods like low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt and cheese.
  • Low impact physical activity
  • Cut down on caffeine
  • Eliminate Alcohol from the diet
  • Talk to someone about what you are feeling
